Meet the Eyewear Designer | Mariyana – The Creative Behind Planet Pop
Mariyana, Senior Designer – Optical, Sun RX & Planet Pop

What does your role as eyewear designer for Planet Pop involve?
Everything you can think of and more! It depends where we are in the season. There is always something different to do.
I could be looking into inspiration and trends for new optical frames and sunglasses, colours and concepts, analysing the current collection figuring out which new shapes should be added, naming and designing characters for every new frame, planning new marketing campaigns, photographing our wonderful product all while ensuring everything fits with the ethos of Planet Pop.
When you’re designing new children’s optical frames and sunglasses, what are the first things you consider?
The two things I always consider, and in the background of every decision, is whether the frames are fun while still being functional. Fit is very important as children’s faces are continually developing and changing as they grow. We need make sure the correct proportions are being considered for their age. Fit and fun are our key ingredients. Also, GLITTER. I love it. I am always trying to find ways to use more of it.
I want the frame to be fun, colourful and exciting so that every child enjoys wearing theirs.
Which Planet Pop frame best represents the brand and why?
All of them! I don’t think there is one frame that encompasses the brand. The playful combination of colours, shapes and sizes makes each of them unique and special in their own way – just like our customers. Some of my personal favourites are Dusky 002, Dreamer, Melon, Minke Sun 002, Sunflower and Honeycomb.
What’s one thing customers might not realise goes into designing a frame?
It’s a lot more technical than you might think. The parameters and considerations to ensure fit is correct, and the different measurements requirements based on age and gender for children’s optical frames.
